How to Prepare Your Scalp Before Wigs, Sew-Ins, and Braids
Scalp preparation is the most skipped step in protective style care — and the one that determines how your install feels from day one. Whether you are getting braids, a sew-in, or installing a wig unit, what you do to your scalp in the 24–48 hours before your appointment sets the foundation for everything that follows.
This is the exact scalp prep routine to follow before every protective style install.
Why Your Scalp Needs a Reset Before Braids
Braids, box braids, knotless braids, twists, wigs, and sew-ins all share one thing in common — they seal your scalp in for weeks. Whatever is on your scalp when you sit in that chair stays there. Sweat, oils, dry shampoo residue, product buildup, dead skin cells. All of it gets locked in under your style.
Over time, that buildup creates the perfect environment for itching, odor, and scalp discomfort. The goal isn't just to wash your hair before braids. The goal is to reset your scalp foundation before every install.
Step 1: Perform a Mineral Scalp Detox (48 Hours Before)
Start your scalp preparation 48 hours before your install with a mineral scalp detox. This is not the same as washing your hair. A mineral detox uses clay-based agents — Bentonite, Kaolin, Activated Charcoal — to draw out compacted buildup, excess sebum, product residue, and sweat from the scalp surface and follicle openings.
Standard shampoo lifts surface debris. A mineral detox performs extraction — pulling impurities out of the scalp at a deeper level that shampoo cannot reach.
Apply the detox to a damp scalp in sections. Massage in slow circular motions for 2–3 minutes. Allow to sit for 3–5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs completely clear.
Use EXTRACT™ Foundation Reset™ by ToxiTress™ for this step — formulated specifically for pre-install scalp preparation with a full mineral extraction complex.
What a Scalp Detox Actually Removes
A clarifying shampoo cleans the hair shaft. A scalp detox goes deeper — targeting the scalp itself. Here's what a proper pre-install scalp detox removes:
- Excess sebum and oils
- Sweat and salt buildup
- Product residue (dry shampoo, leave-ins, edge control)
- Dead skin cells and flakes
- Environmental debris
- Previous install residue — glue, bonding agents, and adhesive residue from wig installs
Step 2: Follow With a Lightweight Conditioner or pH Mist
After rinsing your detox, your scalp is clean and receptive. Do not apply heavy oils or butters at this stage — they will re-clog the follicle openings you just cleared. Instead, apply a lightweight conditioner or a scalp pH reset mist like RESTORE™ Botanical Infusion to restore moisture balance and seal the scalp's acid mantle.
This step is often skipped, but it matters. A mineral detox is slightly alkaline by nature. Rebalancing pH after the detox keeps your scalp comfortable and prevents dryness or tightness under your style.
Step 3: Allow Your Scalp to Fully Dry (24–48 Hours)
Do not install on a damp or wet scalp. When a protective style is installed over a damp scalp, moisture becomes sealed under the style — creating the conditions for mildew, odor, and scalp irritation within the first week of wear.
Allow your scalp to fully air dry for at least 24 hours before your install. 48 hours is ideal. This gives your scalp time to dry completely, your pH to stabilize, and your follicles to remain clear and open before tension is applied.
Step 4: Avoid Heavy Products Before Your Install
In the 24–48 hours between your scalp detox and your install, keep product use minimal. Avoid:
- Heavy scalp oils (castor oil, JBCO, heavy butters applied directly to the scalp)
- Dry shampoo — it immediately reintroduces the buildup you just removed
- Thick leave-in conditioners applied to the scalp — save these for the hair shaft
- Edge control or styling gels on the scalp — these will be sealed under your style and contribute to buildup
Step 5: Treat and Nourish Before Install
Apply a lightweight scalp treatment oil like PURIFY™ Oil Elixir to nourish and protect the scalp before your install. For edges and temples, use TEMPLE THERAPY™ Roll-On for targeted conditioning in the most tension-prone zones.
Step 6: Arrive at Your Appointment With a Clean, Dry Scalp
Your stylist works with what you bring them. Arriving with a clean, detoxed, fully dry scalp means your install starts from the best possible foundation. Your braids will lay cleaner. Your wig unit will sit more comfortably. Your sew-in will feel less tense. And your style will last longer before irritation sets in.
What Happens If You Skip the Scalp Detox?
Skipping the pre-install scalp reset means buildup gets sealed in under your style. Within 1–2 weeks, that buildup can cause:
- Itchy scalp under braids
- Scalp odor
- Flaking and dryness
- Discomfort at the roots
