Sew-In Maintenance Guide

Sew-In Maintenance: How to Keep Your Scalp Healthy

A sew-in is one of the most protective styles you can wear — but it’s also one of the most demanding on your scalp. The weight of the weft, the tension at the roots, and the limited access to your scalp all create conditions where buildup, irritation, and follicle stress can develop quickly.

Proper sew-in maintenance isn’t just about keeping your style looking fresh. It’s about protecting the scalp underneath.

Why Sew-Ins Are Hard on Your Scalp

During a sew-in, your natural hair is braided flat against your scalp and the weft is sewn onto those braids. This means:

  • Your scalp has almost no airflow
  • Sweat and sebum accumulate at the root with no way to escape
  • The weight of the weft creates tension on the follicles
  • Product residue from the install (adhesive, edge control, setting spray) sits against the scalp

Over a 6–8 week sew-in, this can lead to significant buildup, follicle stress, and in some cases, traction alopecia at the hairline.

Before the Sew-In: Start Clean

The most important step in sew-in maintenance happens before the install. A clean scalp means less buildup accumulation during the style, less itching, and a healthier foundation for your follicles.

Apply RESIDUE RESET™ to your scalp 24 hours before your appointment. This mineral detox lifts oils, sweat, product residue, and mineral deposits so your braided base starts completely clean. Follow with SCALP CALM™ to restore pH balance before the install.

During the Sew-In: Targeted Scalp Care

You can’t wash your scalp normally during a sew-in. But you can maintain it with targeted application.

  • Hairline and edges: Apply TEMPLE THERAPY™ Roll-On every 3–4 days along the hairline and nape. This targeted conditioning treatment supports fragile zones without adding buildup.
  • Scalp access points: Use a scalp applicator bottle with diluted witch hazel or a lightweight scalp spray to cleanse between the tracks every 1–2 weeks.
  • Avoid: Heavy oils, thick creams, or dry shampoo directly on the scalp — these add to buildup and are nearly impossible to remove while the sew-in is in.

After the Sew-In: Full Reset Required

When your sew-in comes out, your scalp has been under stress for weeks. This is not the time for a regular shampoo. This is the time for a full scalp reset.

The ToxiTress™ FULL RITUAL KIT™ walks you through all four layers: detox, pH reset, prep oil, and finish. Give your scalp 48–72 hours of rest and recovery before your next install.
